本シンポジウムは，AORI（東京大学大気海洋研究所）とKIOS（釜慶国立大学校海洋科学共同研究所）との国際交流協定（2000〜）に基づき，両研究機関の共同研究活動の一環として実施される。第一回シンポジウムは2002年にORI（東京大学海洋研究所）において，また第二回シンポジウムは2006年にKIOSにおいてそれぞれ開催された。シンポジウムでは全ての海洋科学分野をカバーして最新の研究成果について議論がなされ，両研究機関による共同研究の一層の発展に寄与することが期待される。
