Update: 02. 25, 2013

As a major activity of the Asian CORE Program of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), “LIPI-JSPS Joint International Seminar on Coastal Ecosystems in Southeast Asia” was held on 12-14 November 2012 at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), Jakarta, with a total of 160 participants and 150 presentations (113 oral presentations, 37 posters). The Seminar started with the opening address by Dr. Zainal Arifin (Chairperson, Director of Research Center for Oceanography, LIPI) and the welcome addresses from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Indonesia, and the Japanese Embassy in Indonesia, followed by keynote speeches by Prof. Lukman Hakim (Chairperson of LIPI), Mr. Wenxi Zhu (Secretary of IOC/WESTPAC), and Prof. Shuhei Nishida (Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institiute, Coordinator of the Asian CORE-COMSEA Project). Many presentations in the scientific sessions were of high quality with great impacts, and invited intense discussion amongst participants, such as those on activities in Thailand on coral restoration, compilation of biodiversity maps for assessing and predicting the status of zooplankton biodiversity, and serious accumulation of gavages on the sea bottom near the Coelacanth habitats in Indonesia. A special session was held on the third day on an integrative research of the sea-grass ecosystems in Malaysia with constructive discussions on the results from June-July 2012 and future strategies.
